About Us

SMNC is a private, not-for-profit organization established in 1972. Its mission then was “to improve blighted neighborhoods, preserve demographic diversity and foster self-sufficiency in targeted neighborhoods in the City of Syracuse.” Over the last 40 plus years, SMNC has built and sold 130 new homes to owner-occupants. These homes were built for ourselves, Jubilee Homes, University Hill Corporation and Pioneer Development. It has absorbed 3 other struggling housing agencies, assuming their property management and sales responsibilities. It has purchased, rehabilitated and sold 136 existing homes for owner-occupancy.

Today SMNC owns and manages 214 units in 85 buildings. This represents a real estate portfolio worth approximately five million dollars. The housing stock includes residential housing and several shelter units. SMNC’s rent structure is geared toward low-income residents. This work has taken place in cooperation and collaboration with government and community groups including other housing and community development organizations.

SMNC has partnered with The Salvation Army for 20 years to provide a shelter for runaways and for 4 years, partnered with the Southwest Community Center to provide a respite house for the mentally disabled. SMNC also managed permanent supportive housing units for mentally handicapped families for Home Inc. for 4 years. As of 2008, SMNC is not currently managing rental properties for other entities.

In 2007, SMNC became a fiscal agent for a grassroots community organization and in 2008; SMNC began administering a Community Initiative funded by Onondaga County in the Midland-Lincoln-Bellevue area. This initiative provides mini-grants for property owners, funds for demolition and new construction and substantial rehabilitation.
